Though older age is a common risk factor, many others exist, including<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">diabetes,<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">prolonged steroid use,<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">eye inflammation, disease or injury,<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">smoking,<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">alcohol abuse, or<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">hereditary influence.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Currently, no <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">medication <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">can cure cataracts. However, <\/span><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><a style=\"color: #0000ff;\" href=\"https:\/\/touchophthalmology.com\/conference-hub\/?pagesLoaded=1&amp;post_type_filter=media_gallery,insight&amp;speciality_filter=cataract-surgery\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">modern advances in lens technologies<\/span><\/a><\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, like toric intraocular lenses (IOL), mean surgery can treat it with high success rates.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Elizabeth Yeu, touchOPHTHALMOLOGY\u2019s Editor-in-Chief, shares her enthusiasm about the state of cataract surgery today, saying, <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cWe are so fortunate to experience the innovations in cataract surgery and lens technologies in the last decade.\u201d<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">She explains why:\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cA clear example of this is the toric IOL.
